The Cleaners Union strongly condemns the recent wave of violent riots across the UK, driven by escalating racism, Islamophobia, and extremist ideologies. These actions deeply impact the very fabric of our communities and pose a significant risk to all, including those who labor diligently to maintain our public and private spaces clean and safe.
Cleaners, who are vital to the operation of virtually every sector in society from healthcare facilities to educational institutions, from offices to public transport systems are particularly vulnerable during such tumultuous times. Many of our members, especially those from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities, have expressed profound concern for their personal safety as well as for the safety of their families and the people they serve.
The current unrest, fueled by longstanding and often unchecked racist and xenophobic rhetoric, not only endangers individual lives but also threatens the integrity of our public health systems, at a time when cleanliness and hygiene are more crucial than ever.
In light of this, we urgently call for:
Immediate action from political leaders and policymakers to quell the unrest and to address the underlying societal fractures that lead to such displays of hatred.
A firm stance against divisive rhetoric from all sectors of media and governance, requiring a commitment to fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect.
Enhanced protection and support for all workers, particularly those in roles like cleaning, who perform their duties in increasingly hazardous conditions. Employers must ensure robust safety measures are in place and adhered to, providing all necessary resources to guarantee worker safety.
The Cleaners Union is committed to standing with all affected by these events and will actively participate in dialogue and actions aimed at restoring peace and security. We urge our members, partners, and the community at large to join us in advocating for a just, equitable society where every worker is respected and protected.
